16. AutoUpdater

The AutoUpdater tool is a automated utility that checks online for upgrades, revisions and new versions of OMIT programs. To use it, therefore, your system requires an active Internet connection and account. All OMIT software products created after April 2002 now have an AutoUpdater.

The AutoUpdater runs in two modes:

  • Automatic - determined by the "Check for Upgrades..." check box in the program Options window (View>Options..>Interface)
  • Manual - selected from the Help > OMIT Online > AutoUpdate... menu item

AutoUpdater checks for:

  • Component Upgrade Packages (CUPs) - ActiveX control sets, binary files, DLLs, executables and Windows system modules that enhance or correct problems in the subject program(s)
  • Build Revisions - Minor updates to the immediate program. A version number 3.5.11 is a major version 3, minor version 5 and build revision 11.
  • Versions - Complete product changes are encapsulated in new versions which, because of the depth of modification, are only available for purchase.
Version upgrades are compared and retrieved from the OMIT Program Library web site (www.omitinc.com). Note that revisions can take seconds to minutes to downloads. If the AutoUpdater determines that only a version upgrade is available, you are only permitted to purchase the version upgrade. If this happens, the internal or default browser will take you to the product home page where you can add one to your shopping cart and purchased.

The AutoUpdater can also be downloaded as a separate tool from omitinc.com.
